Although many reports claimed that his release clause was terminated this season and he was free to go. However, Barcelona fought back with La Liga taking their side and they successfully managed to keep Messi in Cataluyna.

Barcelona sacked Quique Setien after losing 8-2 against Bayern Munich in the Quarter Final of the UEFA Champions League. After just seven months managing Barcelona, Quique Setien parted his ways. The club later announced that the former Barcelona player and former Everton manager is given the responsibility to manage the Cataluyna club. Philippe Coutinho is brought back after a loan spell at the German club Bayern Munich. Barcelona also signed Miralem Pjanic from Juventus on a four-year deal for €60 million. In addition, they also swapped their young midfielder Arthur Melo in the deal. Now with the new manager and new system how will Barcelona lineup for the coming season? This might be the last season for Lionel Messi at Barcelona. Let’s take a look at the formation.

Barcelona can start with a 4-2-1-3 Formation

Ronald Koeman could use all the young guns in the playing XI. Without any doubt, Marc-Andre ter Stegen will be in the goal for Barcelona. He was one of the few players to perform consistently for the club in the last season. He is one of the best players for Barcelona in recent years. Sergio Roberto as a right-back. Although Quique Setien used him a lot in the midfield as a right midfielder, his original position is right-back. Nelson Semedo’s performance against Bayern Munich will put him in a doubt in the playing XI. The Gerard Pique and Clement Lenglet duo in the center back will continue unless the club brings in any new defender. Jordi Alba will start at left-back. However, there are doubts over his future at the club, but as of now, he looks the best candidate to start as a left-back.

In the midfield, the new pair of central midfielders, Frenkie de Jong and Miralem Pjanic. The two players will take time to get along with their playing styles. However, they will be very crucial for Barcelona in the midfield. Frenkie de Jong is a great player with good link-up play and his ability to find unmarked players. He is good with the ball and ahs a great passing accuracy. On the other hand, Miralem Pjanic’s defensive awareness and tactical versatility enable him to play offensive as well as defensive football according to the situations. Philippe Coutinho as an attacking midfielder, behind the front three. his through ball ability, passing, pace makes him a lethal player going forward.

In the attack, on the right-wing, without any doubts, Lionel Messi. He is the captain of the club and probably the one with the most experience. Now, that Luis Suarez is linked with Juventus, Antoine Griezmann can play as a center forward. When Ousmane Dembele is fit, he surely is a great player. He has got what every forwards needs, pace, dribbling skills, and finishing. However, he has suffered from injuries throughout his career for Barcelona.

The same back four in Barcelona’s defense and Marc-Andre ter Stegen in the goal. Without any new signings or any new academic players, this is the best possible defense for Barcelona.

In the midfield, Barcelona can start with the new duo of Frenkie de Jong and Miralem Pjanic. Instead of an attacking midfielder, they can also start with a defensive midfielder. With one of the most experienced players in the squad, Sergio Busquets can play a vital role in Barcelona’s midfield. He surely brings the extra defensive protection for the team. However, Ronald Koeman like Jordi Alba there is a doubt over his future at the club. As the manager is trying to sell the aging players and wants to bring young players. However, no young player can bring Sergio Busquets’ experience in the game.

In the attack, Lionel Messi in the right-wing and Antonie Griezmann as a center forward. With no attacking midfielder in the team, it will allow Messi to also play as a free role. Messi can rotate occasionally and play at a Number 10 position. Ousmane Dembele has struggled with injury, and we all know that Philippe Coutinho can also play as a left-winger. So instead of Ousmane Dembele, Koeman can start Philippe Countinho as he is very much consistent. Compared to the skills with Dembele, they both are equally good. However, Ousmane Dembele’s lack of game time because of injury gives an edge to Philippe Coutinho.
